Krista drew me in for as an advance reader with an advertisement for her book that read something to the effect of, “Drinking coffee and kicking ass.” My first thought was, sounds like my kind of day read. That coupled with the cover image and I signed up to see if I could qualify for an Advanced Reader Copy (ACR). Since then I completed an ARC for Book 2 in the Ghostmaker series.

I originally posted the following review on Goodreads: May 2022.

Supernatural, Magical, and Occult Affairs Canada.

There were two first for me with this read. This was my first time reading a novel written by Krista Walsh. And this was my first time getting an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of a novel. I have no complaints on either front. This was a great read. Krista does a nice job setting up the rules for this magical world in the preface and she creates interesting magical abilities within the confines of the world.

A great place for an urban fantasy and a personal favourite for me, a Canadian setting. I enjoyed being familiar personally with the places the action was happening and the places that were talked about outside of the direct story action. However, being familiar with the Canadian setting is not required to enjoy the story, but for me it was an bonus.

Obscure: Ghostmaker Book 1 is the first in this trilogy. The story is told from the point of view of three characters: Jet, Madison, and Gideon. All three voices are interesting, informative, and advance the plot. This novel is a page turner from start to finish. The story sucks the reader in and keeps you there. Chapter one starts with an explosive introduction to the main character and the magical Canadian world she lives in and the storyline stays action pack right to the end.

If there was anything I didn’t like about Obscure, it would be that the story ended. I hope I don’t have long to wait for book two…

If you enjoy urban fantasy, strong female leads, supernaturals, romance, and action then this book is for you. Publication date was for July 1, 2022.

    1. Sci-Fi isn’t a genre I have had much success finding a book that I enjoy. I haven’t tried Dune yet, but it is one that’s been recommended to me. I’m heading your way now to check out your A-to-Z. Thanks for stopping in.

      1. For some completely different sci-fi, try Ammonite by Nicola Griffiths or The Left Hand of Darkness – Ursula LeGuin and He, She and It – Marge Piercy as I mentioned in the post. All women writers and very individual books…
Let me know if you do and you like them…

        1. Some years ago I read “Woman on the Edge of Time” by Marge Piercy. I can’t recall what it was about, but I remember enjoying it. Perhaps a book to go on my re-read list. Thanks for the book recommendations, this A-to-Z has been a year for growing my TBR list.
