Proofreading

Proofreading should not be used as a substitute for editing.

Preparing a manuscript for publication has several stages. Proofreading occurs after the manuscript has gone through the other editorial stages and has been converted into its final form. Proofreading occurs before publication. A proofreader inspects the manuscript to identify errors and mark them for correction. The errors that a proofreader is looking for include content errors, typographical and format errors, and missing copy.

While editing focuses on the bigger picture for the manuscript with consideration to plot holes, characters, structure, organization, tone and etcetera, the proofread is more of a surface read for consistency, spelling, grammar, punctuation, formatting . . . Occasionally, the proofreader catches things missed in the editing process.

What makes me the right choice for your proofreading?

I have a sound knowledge of spelling, grammar, and punctuation. As a lifelong learner, I’m putting that knowledge to work on my writing projects and staying current with trends and changes in the world of writing. I have attention to detail and excellent time management skills.

I don’t provide fact-checking as part of proofreading. In addition, if I have provided any edits to your manuscript, I recommend using someone else for proofreading. A fresh set of eyes is more likely to catch errors than eyes that have been through the manuscript multiple times already. Your goal, and mine, is for your manuscript to sparkle.

When you are ready, please send me an email to discuss your manuscript: writingsparklebooks@gmail.com. I believe that each project is unique, and I will provide you with a quote.

You can view the Editorial Freelance Association website for recommended base rates some proofreaders use. For other information about what proofreaders might charge, you can visit the Editor’s Canada. These are both tools I use when providing your quote.
