This year at Brewing Coffee, Twisting Words & Breaking Pencils my theme is “this year I am writing a novel.” So, in light of that I decided to try and keep to the theme a bit with my A to Z topic. I decided on using writing words that start with each letter of the alphabet to create short posts.

O – Originator
It confused me when she introduced me as “the originator.” After several more introductions the same way to various people in the room I finally clued in. As the author I am the originator or the person who created the stories. When she used the word omnibus I reached for the dictionary!

I remember well the day that ‘omnibus ‘ sent me to my dictionary. I was in high school working my way through Hemingway’s stories. Depressing but compelling, I still have that muti-volumn hard back omnibus of his works.

According to my dictionary, omnibus means an automotive public vehicle designed to carry a large number of passengers, but I guess that wasn’t the meaning she had in mind!

Nope, the link in the piece shows the google definition as, “a volume containing several novels or other items previously published separately.”

I was attempting to be amusing by pointing out there is a second meaning, but it seems not to have come across that way, whoopsie!

I guess having the characters in your stories refer to you as “the originator” is better than as “the creator” – sounds too religious…. I think of the movie Tron and the different hierarchies of people

The Originator of Words is now in court.
All rise, and bid her “Omnibus, Oh Omnibus”
