Large, ugly and frightening – Let’s get creative!

This year I am writing a novel.

I entered my son’s room to open the curtains like I do every morning. I took one look around and thought what in the world? I rolled my eyes and went in search of coffee. I didn’t give it another thought. My husband got up a few hours later and came into the living room. He looked at our son and said, “What happened in your room this morning? Were you dragged out of bed my monsters!”

I could see it then in my minds eyes. Tiny hand gripping and tearing at the bed sheets in terror but to no avail. The claws and teeth grasp and pull at his tiny flailing limbs until he is pulled from by bed trailing his blankets behind and carried off by monsters to the layer of the goblin king!

Now this doesn’t really work for my novel but, yes but, there is a small potential there that I plan to utilize at my next scheduled writing session. Since monsters can be so many things from physical, human, non-human, to emotional and psychological I think it is a great jumping off point for a writing session. My writing inspiration this week is being pulled out of bed by monsters.

I can’t help but note that the places for inspiration can be very surprising and simple. Have you had any inspiration from unexpected places lately?

  1. I’m so much like that in the way I think! I often take a moment in time and twist it: what if a plane fell out of the sky right before my car? What if I turned left instead of right? What adventures would I find myself in?

I don’t know how to turn that off, and I definitely don’t want to.
