What made me smile?

I was sitting in the drive through line with a handful of cars in front and behind me. It was a dull grey morning and chilly. I was feeling indecisive and mildly grumpy. The voice that came over the intercom was bubbly and full of life. I ordered and wondered if she would be wearing a smile as happy as her voice and then I said to myself, oh wait COVID has the power to hide smiles. Anyway, I pulled up to the window and accepted my coffee; I reached out with payment. The bubbly voiced young lady said, “No your coffee was paid for by the vehicle in front of you.” It took me a minute to process what she had said and I cast a glance at the red vehicle pulling out of the lot. I wondered out loud who it might be and cast my eyes back to the happy young lady and noted that she had smile lines in the corners of her eyes and a glitter in her eyes. It was just a small black coffee but whoever that kind person was really made my day. Thank you to the mysterious coffee buyer!
So, what made me smile?
An unexpected gesture of kindness and the very idea of it still makes me smile when I think about it. And in addition, I realized that COVID can’t hide smiles after all!
Big thanks for Trent’s World (The Blog) for The Weekly Smile group.
