Inheritance is book 4 in The Inheritance Cycle. The first three books in the series are: Eragon, Eldest (2005), and Brisingr (2008). I had originally read the first three novels around 2008. I enjoyed them all and planned to read Inheritance when it published. It took me a bit longer then I expected to check this book off my To Be Read List.

A brilliant start that jumps straight into the action. The action carries through to the end with epic battles and fascinating fight scenes. Eragon’s battle preparations are gruelling. The ratio of what he must learn versus the time to learn it, as well as the weight that lays upon learning it all could be crippling to some. Not Eragon and Saphira. I believe it was in the chapter titled “A Heart-to-Heart” when Eragon basically says we learn what we can and fate decides the rest. Just one of the many examples for the lesson of placing one foot in front of the other or the lesson we do the hard stuff because that’s what we do.
Inheritance boasts a cast of characters that includes magicians and several other interesting species. Saphira is my favourite character. Being a dragon aside, I enjoyed her wit and sass. She is a nice balance of fierce and comical. There is humour in Saphira’s vanity, a child-like quality that is amusing when applied to an enormous dragon. She is a beautiful character inside and out. I also enjoyed Arya’s character and the tension between her and Eragon. Then there is Angela, the witch, also known as the herbalist. She is a mysterious character with interesting power and influence.
Great scenes displaying the evil power of Galbatorix. The scenes with Nasuada and Murtagh were eye opening. They quickly became some of my favourite parts of the storyline. I also really enjoyed Eragon, Saphira, and Glaedr’s journey to Vroengard. Some great twists.

I tried reading Eragon when it was first released. Couldn’t finish it. I don’t know why, since I knew it was well-loved at the time of its release.
Maybe a second shot at it down the line.
Like I have nothing else to read.
Sigh.

You’re definitely going to have a lengthy To-Be-Read list, Stu. Haha. But I’d rather have to much to read than not enough.

I liked the first three books in this series, but couldn’t get past Eragon’s cousin’s brutality against the horse he was riding — it still haunts me.
