Memories of reading.

Margaret Atwood’s books were almost the only novels I read in my twenties. I would go to Chapters Book Store and search for titles by her I hadn’t read. In university, if one of her titles was on the syllabus, I would register. Margaret Atwood is a Canadian author who writes dystopian, speculative, and historical fiction. Her writing has a focus on women’s experiences and perspectives. I would like to read her MaddAddam trilogy.

I rented a bachelorette apartment for a few years, also in my twenties; I spoke about it for letter I. My unit was on the second floor and had an octagon-shaped bump out that was all windows. It had old white shutters on the inside, which I loved. I would lie on the floor in that area with my legs bent and my feet propped on a chair and read for hours. I remember power-reading The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings there. Sometimes I would have a mug of hot chocolate. And yes, during some reading sessions, I could hear the bats moving around. It was a while before I realized it was winged critters making the sounds.

Another memory of reading that I cherish is summer reading at my grandmother’s cottage. Mornings with a cup of coffee and my book on the dock while the sun glistens on the water and the lake is silent. Sometimes I would pack a snack and a Pop Shoppe pop—snub nose glass bottle—and head out in the paddle boat to float and read. Reading by the water is still one of my favourite places to read.

What is one of your reading memories?

I wrote this post for letter M of the 2025 A-to-Z blog challenge.

  1. Memories of reading! This could be the beginning of a great book! I know that title would catch my eye. I have a habit of reading hundreds of books every year. It’s been my habit since I was 5years old, and I can’t imagine changing it.

    1. My favourite times of the day to read are early morning before the rest of my house wakes up, and late at night after they’ve all gone to bed. Both times are times when those responsibilities of the day aren’t pulling at me.

      Thanks for stopping in, Melissa.

  2. My favourite photo is lying on a rug in the garden, aged about four, with my grandmother who was reading a book to me. My grandfather was sitting on the steps nearby, smoking his pipe.

    1. I loved reading Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys when I was in school. I can remember checking them out of the library and reading for hours. Nice memory, Godwin. Thank you for sharing.

  3. I have always loved reading. I could sit and read for hours lakeside at my grandparents’ house, and I definitely did. Sitting on one of the comfortable lounge chairs under the shade of the large trees, listening to the birds, the water lapping, the boats going by… nothing brings be more peace. Unfortunately, that house has passed out of our family, but the memories will always be there. Thanks for bringing us down memory lane!
