I started phase one of my break from the traditional working world in 2023 with a slow slide into the world of freelancing—book coach, editor, author, and book reviewer. I was at a place where my passion for my traditional career had not just waned but vanished. The toll of staying stuck in a place that didn’t appreciate me or my contribution was a disservice to my health on many levels. However, I knew nothing about freelancing and questioned how to succeed.

Where do I start? How do I find clients? What is freelancing? Social media is a big part of visibility. What can I share that will draw readers and clients in? My questions went on and on. Enter Simon Fraser University and its editing certificate program. I eagerly enrolled in the Freelance course and it rewarded me with great content and an inspirational teacher. This brings me to the purpose of this post, the recent addition to my “Resources” page—a link to Heidi Turner’s LinkedIn profile.

I started following Heidi during her instruction for the Freelance course. I found she had a passion for freelancing that was inspiring. She has knowledge and experience that offered a better understanding of the fundamentals with a practical application of that knowledge. The tone of Heidi’s posts is powerful, and the content is helpful. I have enjoyed posts by Heidi from creating at-home office space to playing with AI, and unresponsive content, job openings, rates to charge for freelancing, and more.
If you are thinking of breaking into the freelancing world, have broken in already, or maybe are someone who struggles with content ideas, I recommend adding helpful resources to your social media follows so you can have insightful content at your fingertips.
