The Editorial—A.K.A Traditional—Review

An editorial review—also known as a traditional review—is an important part of the book process and an influential part of a book’s life. Typically, an editorial review is completed on a published or soon-to-be-published book and can be used for marketing and building book buzz. It acts like an endorsement shared before or after the book’s release date. So, an editorial review helps to build the book’s status. It provides credibility. The editorial review may persuade potential readers to purchase a copy of the book.

These reviews have a reputation to hold up to and therefore carry a critical weight. The review is reader-focused and unbiased. They are honest critiques of the book with a focus on technical elements: plot, characterization, language, point of view, pacing, originality, etcetera. The review provides a brief description of the book, giving a basic idea of what the book is about. The rest of the review is a critique.

Who writes editorial book reviews?

  • Authors
  • Editors
  • Recognized review sites
  • Professionals in the field of the book’s genre or topic

The editorial review is not to be mistaken with the reader/customer/consumer review. Although equally important, the type of review a consumer writes is based on their personal experience of the book. It’s a review from an individual that may or may not have enjoyed the reading experience. These reviews can be read on sites like Goodreads and Amazon under the customer review section and other similar sites.

So, what qualifies me to provide you with an editorial review? I am an editor, an author, and a professional book reviewer.

Reviews provided by me will be between four and six hundred words. The review will follow the format of summarizing the book before providing the critique. My reviews are about the book. I write them in the present tense and I don’t use a first-person voice. Ensure your book has been properly edited and formatted. I critique the book using the manuscript that is provided.
