Coffee and business

It’s just a simple black coffee warming my coffee cup this morning. What are you drinking?

If we were having coffee, I would start by sharing pictures of my finished China cabinet. Between the weather and the air quality—this week has been a week of thunderstorms—this project took me longer then expected. I’m happy with how it turned out. It is already in my home office and waiting for me to set it up with a coffeemaker and my writing and editing textbooks, which leads me to my next announcement.

If we were having coffee, I would share with you that starting in the fall Writing Sparkle Books is going to be offering book coaching services including assistance in taking a story from the idea to a rough manuscript, different stages of editing, and editorial book reviews. I’m not sure yet if I’m going to offer all services in the fall or do a tiered introduction to them. Anyway, my freelance business is registered as Writing Sparkle Books already and I’m looking forward to putting this dream into a reality. This is part of the updates I previously mentioned that I was going to be making Brewing Coffee, Twisting Words & Breaking Pencils. I completed my last two courses for my editing certificate with a grade of A+, which is an indication of how much I’ve been enjoying editing.

If we were having coffee, I would share that I am almost all the way through my 2023 reading list and starting to build my next stack of books. I am currently reading Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind. This is my first experience reading this author and I’m enjoying the read.

I almost forgot. Last week Gary shared the cool spiderweb picture, and I had mentioned to him that I would share a few web pictures this week over coffee. I wasn’t able to find the one without the spider but with morning dew. The web was strung between the bird feeder and the fence. These pictures look more about the spider then the web. Sorry, Gary. Anyway, here they are:

Well, virtual friend here is the coffee pot. How was your week?

  1. What a fun project to have completed! What a perfect addition to your office!

I love Orb Weavers! We just had a ton of them hatch out so we have little babies all outside our laundry room and on the back stairs leading to the porch! Can’t wait for them size up and make their glorious webs!

Hope you enjoy a lovely weekend! Thanks for the cuppa!

    1. Thanks, Melis. I’m happy with how it turned out. It has sentimental value too, so it adds that extra layer to my love for it.

Thanks for stopping in. I hope you have a lovely weekend too.

  2. How exciting to be starting your book coaching services. I’d love to do an interview on my blog about your venture, if you’re interested. I might even be able to use your services. Congratulations on getting your certificate and your good grade! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Marsha. And I would absolutely be thrilled to be interviewed for your blog! I will send you a message through your blog later this morning. My certificate isn’t complete yet, but I’m making progress and pulling grades. I will update my home page with business details and do a few posts between now and the fall.

  4. Hi Shari – I love what you did with that cabinet and what you have planned for it. I have a kitchen dresser in my little office and use it to display some glass pieces that I love and the bottom cupboards for storage. Well done on how your editing is coming along and for all your book coaching plans. If I had even a remote idea for a novel, I’d definitely enjoy having someone guide me through the process.

    1. I think repurposing pieces of furniture we already have is brilliant. Each piece tells its own story.

I’ll be here is you do decide to try your hand at a novel. Your posts are inspirational and real, so you never know there might be something there . . .

      Happy Sunday, Leanne.

  5. The china cabinet is gorgeous!

Congrats on launching your new editing/coaching business! I’m curious about the editing certificate you mention. Was that an online program?

    1. Hi Janet. Thank you.

The editing certificate is through Simon Fraser University. It is online. It can take 2 to 5 years to complete depending on how fast or slow a person needs to work. It mostly uses the Chicago Manual of Style, and I think the other style guide we have referenced is the Canadian Style Guide. The Chicago Manual of Style seems to be the dominant guide, which I think is the go-to style guide in the book world for the most part.

  6. I’ve heard good things about Wizard’s First Rule! My To Be Read pile just keeps growing, haha. I’m currently reading something for my book club that I don’t particularly care for, but I’m 2/3 of the way through it, so I’m trying to power through.

My weeks are long right now, but next week is supposed to be less busy. We’ll see how that works out… haha.

    1. My To Be Read pile keeps growing too. I don’t belong to a book club. I’ve thought about it, but never committed. I did just sign up for an author’s beta reader team. She has four titles coming out within a year that I committed to reading and providing feedback on. I’m excited about it.

I hope your week isn’t to busy and you get time to read and write. Thanks for stopping in.

      1. I joined because my friend was starting it. She’s since moved on, but I’ve stuck around. It’s nice to read things I’d never have picked up otherwise. (The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is my favorite ever book, and I got it from there.) But with my limited reading time, it does cut down on being able to churn through my TBR pile!
