I loved reading The Shannara Series by Terry Brooks. I loved the story, the characters, and Terry’s writing style. That love coupled with my own aspirations to become a published author had me searching for tips and tricks from the authors I adore. So, I picked up my copy of Sometimes the Magic Works: Lessons form a Writing Life, and I never looked back.
The following review was originally posted on Goodreads: December 2021.
“I cannot imagine life without books any more than I can imagine life without breathing.” – Terry Brooks, Sometimes the Magic Works: Lessons from a Writing Life
I came to be a Terry Brooks fan only within the last couple of years when I fell in love with The Shannara series. Learning about Terry Brooks through reading that series wasn’t enough for me as an aspiring author, so I searched for more. That search brought me to “Sometimes the Magic Works: Lessons from a Writing Life.”
This little gem of a book did not disappoint. So, many parts of the book spoke to me on a personal level. I found “Sometimes the Magic Works: Lessons from a Writing Life” inspirational I enjoyed knowing that Terry had a career at one point that was not as an author, that he has a family and he has his writing. I loved knowing that he got lost in his creative thoughts and developing worlds. I felt refreshed and encouraged by Terry’s words, “I have decided, on reflection, it is best to just remember that sometimes the magic really works.” As many before me have stated, this is a great read for aspiring writers and Terry Brooks fans.

I read the first couple of The Shannara Series. Lost interest during the third. That was when they were first hitting the shelves.
Worth trying to get back into them again?
I’ll check out the book you mentioned.

I’ve really enjoyed the whole series. Although, I did take a short break after reading several of the books. It was the only thing I was reading through and I just needed a bit of time out of the world. Then I returned and was happily lost in the story and world again. So you may find the same thing.
I’m looking forward to our A-to-Z day off tomorrow. Thanks for stopping in, Stu. Have a great weekend.
