Dictionary information
The standard dictionaries used by North American copy editors for Canadian, American, and British spelling are:

  • Canadian Oxford Dictionary, 2nd edition—the go-to dictionary for copy editing in Canadian style because of its focus on Canadian words and spellings
  • Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition—the standard dictionary to use when copy editing in American style
  • Oxford English Dictionary—the standard dictionary to use when copy editing in British style
