Back to coffee…

If we were having coffee, I would share with you that my run of tea has ended. This week we are back to virtual coffees.

What are we sipping? You might ask.

Coffee this morning is a butter pecan. The smell of it is butter with a sweet nut. It is almost black in my mug, which is a big change from the last few weeks of describing translucent tea colours. There is nothing translucent about this cup of coffee. It has a bitter, nutty taste. The after effect is almost oily or buttery. Overall, it is a strong welcoming sip of coffee.

If we were having coffee, I would share with you that my younger son is attending a summer program called Reading University. It is a three-week program that focuses on reading. I am so excited that he is attending. Missing grade one during the first COVID shut down has been hard for catching up to grade level reading. This program should have him reading at grade level in three weeks. During our last trip to the bookstore, he picked out a novel by Kevin Sands called The Black Thorn Key. We just finished reading it together and are moving on to two in the series. We both enjoyed book 1.

If we were having coffee, I would share with you that my oldest boy and I broke-put the Backgammon board. I haven’t played since I was a kid, so I had to review the rules. We had a blast, and it is our new favourite game. We also had a couple of games of Scrabble. It was fun too. Of course, there was some baseball played at the park and a bit of croquet.

If we were having coffee, I would pass you the coffee pot, smile, and sit back to listen to the details of your week.

  1. So glad your son getting reading support during the summer. Not many schools are investing in those most needed service.

    1. He’s completed week one and seems to be having a lot of fun with it. So, he’s off to a good start.
      I agree that the pandemic has been hard on the kids. They are resilient, so I think with a bit of extra work we can get them where they need to be.

  4. Ah, back to coffee… I don’t know how long I could stay away. Hope the reading class goes well with your son. Having a love a reading is the important thing, and it sounds like he does enjoy books, so that is a huge plus. I can’t remember the last time I played backgammon. Not sure if I would want to even try again….
    I hope your weekend is going well and that you have a wonderful week ahead!

    1. His love of books is definitely there but his frustration with being behind sometimes makes it a struggle which breaks my heart. I am so excited about this program.

      As for backgammon, I was the same as you. But once we got into it, it is actually a lot of fun.

  5. The coffee is very good! It is wonderful that your son can attend a summer reading camp. Fabulous initiative! Reading well is so important. My daughter (almost 10) started reading when she was 3, she reads English very well. Swedish is still slow and she is not very interested in improving either. That does make me sad, and I hope it changes. Books are important. We do read a lot in our family. I hope you are enjoying a fabulous weekend!

    1. I don’t have much experience with reading in more then one language. My neighbour enrolled their daughter in a French speaking school, but had brought her up learning and speaking English. She struggled trying to get her French reading for a while. I imagine learning two languages at the same time would be challenging. I’ve tried my hand at learning Spanish a few times, and even with that as my sole focus its tough.
