I watch.

He is curled up on his side on the breakfast bench. Occasionally he shifts uttering a dramatic “ouch.” Eyes closed with breakfast and juice untouched on the table. He is dressed for school. I consider, should he go? He doesn’t want to. Time to ask where he feels unwell. I brace with thoughts of projectile vomit and diarrhea.

4 year old: A drawn out “No!”
Me: What doesn’t feel well?
4 year old: He has no words for his dramatic illness; he bends slowly as if the effort is painful and he points to his TOE!

Crisis fail; school time.

  1. Ha! Since teaching in kindergarten it is amazing how a hang nail, not so wiggly tooth and a mosquito bite can distract and earn attention. Yet, if there is an exciting activity or recess is near, then no 103 fever or nausea can deter.
